She didn't want to be a part of this stupid dance, or anything to do with it, but at the same time, she did want to allow herself to have a bit of fun, or try to at least. Not to mention that her Mother had insisted that she try and help set up for it. It was all part of Kevala's need to try and get Kazumi to socialize more. More and more often the woman seemed to be concerned with her daughter's well being. Though Kaz could easily venture a guess as to why. She had lost her boyfriend that she had cared for very much....and then, the only two people in the world that Kazumi truly opened up to and trusted the most were both gone. Aiden and Ezekial.
Without her brothers, with her family torn apart, Kaz just wasn't sure she could handle it. Hell, she probably would have ended up giving into her depression at some point if not for running into Patrick on that dock.....She may not have told him as much, but that night, he had saved her...From what she wasn't sure she could fully explain, but he had none the less. Now, well now, she felt like maybe she could try and do the things her Mother wished her to do....try and be more social....try and not lose herself in the sadness and heartache that had, up until now, been consuming her.
So, here she was. Dressed in her usual blue jeans, t-shirt and jacket...the hood, as always, pulled up over her head to conceal her from view as she went to work trying to create the archway for the entrance to the dance. The basic frame had been put into place earlier by some of the kids from shop class. She had asked them if they would please build it to the specifications that she had drawn out a few days prior and seeing as how they all rather liked Kazumi, saying she was a sweet, if not a bit strange, girl...they had happily complied and done so.
It looked rather beautiful if she did say so herself. Though she was worried, ultimately, as to what her Mother would think as well as the rest of the students. For now, it was simply a solid wood arch way, with intricate loops and designs cut into it to allow for her to lace various flowers and lights through. The goal? Well it was pretty simple. To decorate it enough to give it some flare, but not so much as to take away from the overall beauty of the wood work and the designs that covered it from one side down the other.
Taking a few specifically picked out flowers from the box next to her, Kaz would go about wiring them to the frame, taking a step back every now and then so that she could look over the work she had done and then going back to work with the rest of it. Of course, she could have used a ladder to get to the top, but instead she left it alone. She had other plans for that, which she would get to once she had finished going down the opposite side with another array of flowers.
Finally, once she was done with that part, she would move further down the pathway, coming to a second archway, which looked almost identical to the first...the same process repeated upon it with the flowers along each side. It took her about an hour to do both arches and then, from there, she knew she would be spending another hour or more finishing them up. But, it was quiet, and it was starting to get a bit dark. She had time before the dance, but that didn't mean she could just take her time. So...hurrying back to the large box that contained her decorations, she would grab out an elegant looking white cloth with small details embroidered into the edges. This was the part where she got the ladder, climbing up onto it, and using a staple gun so that she could fasten the material across the top and down the sides...making sure that no wind was going to come along and blow it away...
She then unrolled the material all the way to the opposite arch and would again climb up, repeating the process and in turn making a rather nice looking walkway for the students to have to pass through to get to the dance. Yet it was still lacking in something....and thankfully she had known just what that would be and planned ahead. Another trip to the decorations box and she would retrieve several small lights that she could stake into the ground along either side of the walkway, spacing them out every so many feet, so as not to flood the area with light. Then, at the top, she would hang soft, yellow lit lanterns...None of that paper lantern crap...but instead actual, antique looking lanterns that she had picked out due to their relevance to the time period of the dance. One was hung in the center of the first arch, another in the center of the second, casing just enough light to give off an almost romantic glow to the pathway.
Once she was done, she would walk backwards, looking around at her work and even venturing so far as to remove the hood from her head, the darkness of the evening setting in and giving her the confidence to do so. She liked it....Enough that it brought a smile to her lips, faint, but a smile none the less.
Now it was just time to pack up and head to the store to pick up her outfit for the dance. She really didn't want to go, but Mother was insisting and well....she just wanted to try and get closer to the woman, seeing as how right now, it was all the family Kaz really had left.....Sure, she had her cousins, but they didn't talk to her that much really...at least not in the way her brother had....So her mom was her last option.
Getting in her car, she checked to make sure the radio was off, and then would pull out of the parking lot, a glance to the clock to confirm what time it was. She had just enough time to go and pick up her outfit which she had custom ordered a few weeks ago, and go home to change. She had no clue what she was going to do at the dance, but she supposed showing up was good enough....
Arriving at the store, she would hurry inside, her hood once more pulled up over her head to hide herself from view, what with all the strangers currently lurking about....A quick dash to the counter in the back where the woman would look up, take note of her and smile....She had been in a couple times to get the outfit adjusted so she knew that she didn't have to say anything....Which was good...It was embarrassing that she couldn't talk right...and well, she didn't wan to be embarrassed this early on. The dance was going to do that well enough.
Once she was given her costume for the night, she would fish out one of her credit cards and pay for it...Back to the car, and then home...She had to hurry up and change so that she could get to the dance before she was too late and her Mother got onto her for being tardy...Not that Kev would, but yeah, Kaz didn't want to take that chance.
