Don't worry about it, we were all newbies in RPing before, so we know your pain. As for where to start, picking a character model is usually a good start, then go from there. How old you want your character to be, what kind of personality do you want for your character, etc.
Don't be afraid to ask any of us for help, we'd be more than happy to help.

Secondly, the avatar and signatures are added in the profile section of the board. Click your name, then click on mod profile and then add away.

What Sarah said.
You just need to put the url of the image you want to use in your profile.
Click on your name, click "Modify Profile", and then scroll down to the box titled "Avatar" and the bigger box titled "Signature." It's best to go with a picture at least 100x100 for the avatar, but you can use pictures up to 120 in width, 150 in length, but don't quote me on that.

Haha, I'll help you out.
Avatars: You just need to put the url of the image you want to use.
Signatures: You need to put this for it: [IMG]Insert url to the image here[/IMG]
If you want the image centered, just do this: [center][IMG]Insert url to the image here[/IMG][/center]
I would suggest using a smaller image for the signature though, or if you want, you can ask someone to make a signature for you.
